I initiated the participation of students of my institute (IBB) into the most prestigious international scientific event called iGEM, i.e International Genetically Engineered Machines in 2009.

Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology’s team first time participated in this competition. 7 students from IBB successfully participated in iGEM 2009 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA held between 31st October 2009 to 2nd November 2009.

I was principal advisor of the team. My team did very well in the competition and has been appreciated by experts in the field of synthetic biology, in USA. My team could successfully construct 14 DNA biobricks which are submitted to iGEM in 2009 and are available in public domain.

IBB team was awarded most prestigious Bronze Medal in iGEM 2009. This is a matter of great pride and honour to University of Pune and our country.

IBB iGEM team was sponsored by University of Pune and 4 Industries in India.
For details see:

http://2009.igem.org/main_page, http://2009.igem.org/team:IBB_Pune .

In 2009 only 4 teams from India participated in iGEM which consists of IIT Mumbai, IIT Chennai, NCBS Bangalore and IBB, Pune.

IBB is the only University Institute in India which took part in this event.

This clearly indicates the vision of Professor B.A Chopade to nurture the talent of our students and compete at the international level.
